Position Summary:
The School-Based Physical Therapist provides direct and consultative services to students with disabilities in a school setting. The therapist collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to develop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) that address students' physical, developmental, and functional needs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Direct Services: Conduct comprehensive physical therapy evaluations to assess students' gross motor skills, fine motor skills, balance, coordination, sensory processing, and functional mobility.
- Develop and implement individualized physical therapy plans based on student needs and IEP goals.
- Provide direct physical therapy interventions to students in various settings, including classrooms, therapy rooms, and specialized programs.
- Utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques, including therapeutic exercise, gait training, assistive technology, and sensory integration strategies.
- Monitor student progress and modify interventions as needed.
- Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other professionals to ensure effective implementation of therapy plans.
- Consultative Services: Provide consultation and training to teachers, parents, and other school staff on strategies to support students' physical and developmental needs in the classroom.
- Adapt classroom environments and activities to meet the physical needs of students with disabilities.
- Recommend and assist with the selection and procurement of assistive technology devices.
- Participate in IEP meetings and other relevant meetings to advocate for student needs.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all services provided.
- Comply with all relevant laws and regulations, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
- Professional Development: Maintain current knowledge and skills in the field of pediatric physical therapy through professional development activities, such as continuing education courses and conferences.
- Participate in professional organizations and committees.
Qualifications:
- Degree in Physical Therapy from an accredited institution.
- Current and valid licensure as a Physical Therapist in the state of New Jersey.
- Experience working with children with disabilities in a school or related setting preferred.
- Knowledge of pediatric development, typical and atypical motor development, and common childhood disabilities.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Proficiency in using computers and electronic health records.
