Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) - Orthopedics
Department: Rehabilitation Services
Reports To: Supervising Physical Therapist
Summary:
The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) is a licensed professional who provides direct patient care under the supervision of a Physical Therapist. The PTA implements the established treatment plan, educates patients, and documents patient progress, primarily for individuals with orthopedic conditions. This role requires strong clinical skills, excellent communication abilities, and a passion for helping patients achieve their functional goals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Implement treatment plans developed by the supervising Physical Therapist, utilizing a variety of therapeutic techniques, including exercise, manual therapy, modalities (e.g., ultrasound, electrical stimulation), and patient education.
- Observe, monitor, and document patient progress, noting changes in condition and response to treatment, and communicate this information to the supervising Physical Therapist.
- Educate patients and their families on proper exercise techniques, body mechanics, and home programs to facilitate recovery and prevent re-injury.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living (ADLs) as needed, such as gait training, transfers, and use of assistive devices.
- Maintain a clean and organized treatment area, ensuring equipment is properly functioning and sanitized.
- Participate in case conferences and contribute to the interdisciplinary team approach to patient care.
- Adhere to all ethical guidelines, professional standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Associate's degree in Physical Therapist Assisting from an accredited program.
- Current and valid PTA license in the state of CA
- CPR certification.
- Experience in orthopedics preferred.
- Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and therapeutic techniques.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and patient education skills.
- Ability to work effectively under the supervision of a Physical Therapist.
- Proficiency in electronic documentation systems.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods.
- Ability to assist patients with transfers and mobility activities.
- Fine motor skills for manual therapy techniques and documentation.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in a clinical setting.
