Job Summary:
The Director of Surgical Services provides strategic and operational leadership to the perioperative team, ensuring safe, high-quality surgical care delivery. This role holds 24/7 accountability for surgical services operations, performance improvement, staff development, and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Operations:
- Lead and manage surgical services focusing on safety, efficiency, and excellence in patient care.
- Identify and address actual or potential issues within the department; implement and follow through on practical solutions.
- Participate in hospital and departmental committees, maintaining clear communication with team members and leadership.
- Promote and enhance the patient experience within surgical services.
Staff Development & Engagement:
- Provide staff coaching, feedback, and performance evaluations; support individualized development plans.
- Facilitate employee engagement strategies and mentor future leaders through regular staff rounding and involvement.
- Enforce human resources policies and standards of care.
Regulatory & Quality Oversight:
- Develop, implement, and evaluate a comprehensive surgical services program aligned with quality and safety standards.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory agencies, accreditation requirements, and hospital policies.
- Oversee performance improvement initiatives to monitor and improve clinical outcomes.
Strategic & Financial Management:
- Support growth initiatives and implement program enhancements to expand patient services.
- Prioritize, justify, and manage capital equipment needs.
- Oversee departmental budgeting and resource utilization to ensure fiscal responsibility.
- Promote the department as the “OR of Choice” for patients, physicians, staff, and payers.
Communication & Culture:
- Build strong internal and external networks to support departmental and organizational goals.
- Promote a culture of service excellence and professional conduct.
- Uphold the organization’s mission, values, and ethical standards.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) required
- Master’s degree in Nursing, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred
- Minimum of 3 years of leadership experience in surgical services or a related field preferred
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the applicable state required
- CNOR (Certified Nurse Operating Room) preferred
- CSSM (Certified Surgical Services Manager) preferred
