Position: Neonatal Nurse Practitioner / Fellowship-Trained Physician Assistant
Location: Richmond, VA
Schedule: Full-time
A state-of-the-art Level IV NICU is expanding and is actively hiring experienced Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (NNPs) and Fellowship-Trained Physician Assistants (PAs) to join a growing team dedicated to providing advanced care for critically ill newborns. This new unit will offer specialized treatment for complex prenatal and fetal conditions and will be supported by a dedicated neonatal transport team—capable of both ground and air transport and offering lifesaving ECMO services.
Key Responsibilities:
As an Advanced Practice Provider in the NICU, you’ll demonstrate clinical expertise and leadership in the care of neonates, engaging in comprehensive assessments, diagnoses, and the development of evidence-based care plans. You’ll also serve as a mentor and resource for patients, families, and the healthcare team.
Clinical Practice:
- Perform advanced assessments, formulate differential diagnoses, and develop treatment plans.
- Manage critically ill neonates, including initiating and adjusting therapeutic interventions.
- Collaborate with physicians and multidisciplinary teams across the continuum of care.
- Support emergency procedures and care transitions (inpatient, ambulatory, home health).
Coaching & Leadership:
- Mentor staff and students through direct observation, teaching, and feedback.
- Lead by example in patient advocacy, problem-solving, and adapting care delivery systems.
- Develop educational resources and implement staff training initiatives.
Collaboration & Consultation:
- Coordinate patient care by partnering with internal departments, community resources, and payers.
- Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and case discussions.
- Offer expert consultation to patients, families, and clinical colleagues.
Research & Quality Improvement:
- Apply current research and evidence-based practice to optimize patient outcomes.
- Identify opportunities for quality improvement and clinical innovation.
- Engage in scholarly activities, such as presenting, publishing, or participating in research initiatives.
Ethical & Professional Practice:
- Promote ethical decision-making in patient care.
- Facilitate resolution of ethical dilemmas through interdisciplinary collaboration.
- Uphold patient rights and incorporate individual values into care planning.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Master’s Degree in Nursing or Physician Assistant Studies
- Current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner (Neonatal specialty) or Physician Assistant in Virginia
- Prescriptive authority (if applicable)
- Minimum of two years of experience as a Registered Nurse
- Credentialed and eligible to practice as an Advanced Practice Provider in accordance with state regulations
Preferred:
- Experience in an academic healthcare setting
- Two or more years of NICU experience in an advanced practice or clinical leadership role
- Neonatal Nurse Practitioner certification or neonatal-focused training for PAs
Physical & Mental Requirements:
- Able to lift 50–100 lbs and perform frequent bending, walking, and reaching
- Capable of managing fast-paced, high-acuity situations with multiple priorities
- Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and communication skills required
