Position Overview:

The Director of Emergency Services is responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of a high-acuity Emergency Department. This role ensures the consistent delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care while advancing departmental goals, supporting staff development, managing resources, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. The Director is a key leader in driving performance improvements, patient experience initiatives, and service line growth within the department.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify and resolve actual or potential service issues; implement sustainable solutions with timely communication and follow-through.
  • Actively participate in departmental and organizational committees, serving as a liaison and maintaining strong communication with stakeholders.
  • Champion efforts to improve the patient experience across all aspects of emergency care.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to team leaders and staff, supporting professional growth, performance feedback, and development planning.
  • Promote a positive work environment and enforce HR policies and compliance standards.
  • Communicate effectively across all levels of the organization, ensuring transparency of departmental and organizational priorities.
  • Implement evidence-based practices to support employee engagement and retention.
  • Identify and develop future leaders through coaching, rounding, and succession planning.
  • Establish and enforce emergency care standards; ensure consistency in performance and compliance across the department.
  • Design, implement, and continuously evaluate emergency care programs aligned with the organization’s mission and quality goals.
  • Monitor and ensure adherence to accreditation, regulatory, and safety standards related to patient care and environmental safety.
  • Lead a performance improvement (PI) program to assess, monitor, and enhance clinical and operational outcomes.
  • Oversee department operations to ensure delivery of quality services consistent with organizational policies and professional standards.
  • Maintain compliance with infection control and exposure control protocols related to bloodborne and airborne pathogens.
  • Support recruitment and talent acquisition efforts to ensure adequate and skilled staffing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 3–5 years of recent experience as a Director in a large, acute care Emergency Department (recent defined as within the past year). Candidates must show career stability and a proven track record of success in improving metrics and patient outcomes.
  • Strong consideration will be given to experienced Emergency Department Managers in large hospitals who demonstrate readiness for a Director-level role.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required.
  • Master’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or related field preferred.
  • Current RN licensure in applicable state required.
