Position Summary:
The Certified Surgical Technologist – Surgical First Assistant (CSTFA) in the Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) plays a vital role in supporting surgical teams during complex cardiovascular procedures. This position is responsible for providing technical assistance, ensuring optimal exposure, maintaining hemostasis, and performing other essential intraoperative tasks, including saphenous vein harvesting. The CSTFA works closely with surgeons, nurses, and other operating room staff to deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality surgical care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist the surgeon during cardiovascular and open-heart procedures, including tissue retraction, exposure, and wound closure.
- Perform saphenous vein harvesting for coronary artery bypass procedures.
- Maintain a sterile surgical environment and ensure compliance with aseptic technique.
- Collaborate with the surgical team to anticipate surgeon needs and support optimal workflow.
- Prepare and maintain surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies.
- Monitor patient safety and respond quickly to intraoperative needs.
- Participate in call coverage, including one day per week and one weekend per month.
Qualifications:
Education & Certification:
- High School Diploma or equivalent – Required
- Current Certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) through an accredited agency – Required
- Current Certification as a Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) through a nationally accredited agency – Required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification – Required
Experience:
- Current acute clinical care experience – Preferred
- Prior experience as a CSTFA in surgical settings – Required
- Cardiovascular Operating Room (CVOR) and vein harvesting experience – Required
- Open-heart and cardiothoracic surgery experience – Required
Additional Details:
- Must be comfortable assisting in high-acuity, complex cardiovascular surgeries.
- Cardiothoracic experience is acceptable as long as the candidate has performed open-heart cases.
- Shift flexibility based on department needs.
