PHARMACIST-IN-CHARGE (PIC)

Position Summary
The Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC) provides clinical, operational, and regulatory oversight for a pharmacy focused on sterile compounding and infusion services. This role ensures safe, compliant, and efficient medication preparation and distribution in alignment with applicable standards and regulations. The PIC oversees pharmacy staff, supports clinical teams, and serves as the primary point of contact for internal leadership, auditors, and regulatory bodies.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, knowledgeable in sterile compounding practices, experienced with infusion therapies, and capable of leading a high-performing team in a dynamic environment.
Key Responsibilities
Regulatory Compliance & Oversight
- Serve as the designated Pharmacist-in-Charge in accordance with applicable pharmacy practice regulations.
- Ensure compliance with relevant laws, standards, and professional guidelines for sterile compounding and pharmacy operations.
- Maintain current policies, procedures, and operational standards.
- Oversee required licensing, renewals, documentation, and regulatory reporting.
- Lead audits, inspections, and follow-up actions.
Sterile Compounding & Clinical Responsibilities
- Oversee preparation, verification, and release of compounded sterile preparations (CSPs).
- Ensure adherence to aseptic technique and environmental quality standards.
- Review and verify medication orders for accuracy, safety, and appropriateness.
- Serve as a clinical resource for internal teams involved in patient care and medication management.
Leadership & Team Management
- Supervise pharmacists, technicians, and other pharmacy personnel.
- Provide training, ongoing competency assessments, and performance evaluations.
- Promote a culture focused on safety, quality, teamwork, and accountability.
- Support staffing schedules to ensure adequate coverage.
Operational Management
- Manage daily workflow, including intake, clinical review, preparation, and dispensing of medications.
- Oversee inventory management and ensure proper handling of specialty and high-cost medications.
- Continuously evaluate and improve operational processes.
- Collaborate with clinical, administrative, and support teams to ensure timely and coordinated care.
Quality Assurance
- Direct the pharmacy’s quality assurance and continuous improvement activities.
- Oversee documentation of incidents, deviations, and process improvements.
- Ensure completion of all required staff competencies, environmental monitoring, and validation activities.
Qualifications
Education & Licensure
- Degree in Pharmacy (PharmD or equivalent) required.
- Active, unrestricted pharmacist license.
- Completion of training in sterile compounding practices.
- Advanced compounding certification preferred.
Experience
- ~3 years of experience in sterile compounding, infusion services, or related practice areas.
- Prior leadership experience (PIC, manager, or lead pharmacist) preferred.
- Experience in regulatory compliance, quality assurance, and operational oversight.
Skills & Competencies

- Ability to support clinical decision-making and manage complex therapies.
