Hospice Administrator
Position Summary
The Hospice Administrator provides executive leadership and operational oversight for hospice services within a healthcare system. This role is accountable for clinical quality, regulatory compliance, financial performance, strategic growth, and the overall patient and family experience. The Administrator ensures hospice services meet federal and state regulations, accreditation standards, and organizational policies while promoting interdisciplinary, patient-centered end-of-life care. The position also supports community engagement initiatives, service development, and outreach efforts to improve access to hospice care and address underserved populations.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Lead daily hospice operations including clinical services, intake and referrals, scheduling, supply management, durable medical equipment coordination, pharmacy workflows, volunteer services, bereavement programs, and inpatient or contracted care settings
- Establish operational goals, performance metrics, and service standards aligned with organizational strategy
- Maintain 24/7 operational readiness through on-call leadership structures and escalation protocols
- Foster a culture of safety, accountability, compassion, and continuous improvement
Compliance & Regulatory Oversight
- Ensure full compliance with federal and state hospice regulations, including Medicare/Medicaid Conditions of Participation, HIPAA, infection control standards, accreditation requirements, and licensure rules
- Lead survey readiness, audits, policy management, corrective action plans, and staff education initiatives
- Partner with compliance and legal teams to manage risk and regulatory matters
Clinical Quality & Workforce Management
- Collaborate with Medical Director, Clinical Leadership, and interdisciplinary teams to maintain high clinical standards and documentation quality
- Oversee quality improvement initiatives, patient and family satisfaction programs, complaint resolution, and outcome monitoring
- Recruit, develop, coach, and evaluate hospice leadership and staff
- Ensure staff competency, orientation, ongoing education, and performance management
Patient Experience & Care Coordination
- Ensure delivery of holistic, person-centered end-of-life care addressing physical, emotional, cultural, spiritual, and psychosocial needs
- Support seamless transitions of care across acute, post-acute, outpatient, and community settings
Financial & Strategic Management
- Develop and manage operating budgets including revenue, expenses, staffing models, productivity, and cost management
- Monitor key performance indicators such as census, length of stay, payer mix, utilization, and financial margins
- Partner with revenue cycle teams to ensure billing accuracy and documentation integrity
Growth & Community Engagement
- Execute growth strategies including referral development, service expansion, and community partnerships
- Build strong relationships with hospitals, physicians, long-term care providers, home health agencies, and community organizations
- Analyze market trends and competitive dynamics to guide strategic positioning
- Serve as a visible community leader supporting education, outreach, and philanthropic initiatives
Organizational Collaboration
- Align hospice operations with enterprise standards in HR, IT, compliance, quality, safety, and purchasing
- Participate in system-wide initiatives focused on care coordination, population health, and value-based care
Qualifications & Experience
- Strong knowledge of hospice regulations, Conditions of Participation, licensure requirements, and accreditation standards
- Experience in managed care, quality improvement, and interdisciplinary team leadership
- Thorough understanding of hospice and home care services, referral systems, and community resources
- Minimum of 5 years of hospice leadership or management experience
- Prior experience providing direct patient care in a clinical specialty
Education & Licensure
- Bachelor’s degree in Health Administration or related field required
- Master’s degree preferred
- Valid state driver’s license and automobile insurance as required
