Position Overview
A healthcare facility in Tyler, Texas is seeking a dependable and detail-oriented Certified Lab Assistant (CLA) to support daily clinical laboratory operations. This role is responsible for specimen collection, processing, clerical support, and assisting laboratory staff to ensure accurate and timely diagnostic testing.
The Certified Lab Assistant plays a vital role in maintaining workflow efficiency, quality standards, and positive patient interactions.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect, label, and process patient specimens including blood, urine, and other body fluids in accordance with established protocols.
- Perform venipuncture and capillary collections for patients of all ages.
- Prepare specimens for testing, including centrifugation, aliquoting, and packaging for transport.
- Accurately enter patient and specimen information into the laboratory information system (LIS).
- Maintain proper specimen identification and chain of custody procedures.
- Ensure compliance with laboratory quality standards and regulatory requirements, including Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) guidelines.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of laboratory work areas.
- Stock and monitor laboratory supplies; notify supervisor of inventory needs.
- Follow infection control and safety protocols, including proper handling of biohazardous materials.
- Provide professional and courteous service to patients, providers, and staff.
- Assist laboratory technologists and technicians with general support duties as needed.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and adhere to all applicable privacy regulations.
Qualifications
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current Certified Lab Assistant (CLA) certification or equivalent laboratory assistant/phlebotomy certification.
- Demonstrated competency in venipuncture and specimen handling.
- Basic computer skills and experience with electronic medical records or laboratory systems.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills.
Preferred:
- Prior experience in a hospital or clinical laboratory setting.
- Knowledge of laboratory safety standards and quality control procedures.
Work Environment
- Full-time schedule (day shift; specific hours determined by department needs).
- May require standing for extended periods and lifting up to 25 pounds.
- Exposure to bloodborne pathogens and biohazard materials; appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) provided.
