Job Summary
The Director of Surgical Services provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for the overall function, staffing, and financial performance of the surgical departments. This role ensures the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care by leading volume forecasting, clinical planning, and budget management. The Director is responsible for fostering a culture of accountability, safety, and interdisciplinary collaboration while implementing strategies, policies, and procedures that align with organizational objectives.
Major Responsibilities
Quality & Clinical Excellence
- Evidence-Based Practice: Cultivates a superior clinical identity by identifying and implementing evidence-based practices to advance patient safety and quality outcomes.
- Standardized Care: Manages variation in clinical practice to improve efficiency, effectiveness, and cost control while ensuring total adherence to regulatory standards of care.
- Operational Flow: Directs daily nursing practice and unit operations, ensuring efficient patient throughput, volume forecasting, patient flow coordination, and effective discharge planning.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Fosters cross-departmental communication and collaboration to ensure staff with appropriate clinical competencies are assigned to meet evolving patient needs.
- Compliance & Benchmarking: Monitored internal and external benchmarks, accreditations, and designations to actively pursue and maintain high-performance recognition.

Financial Stewardship
- Fiscal Management: Participates in the annual budgeting process, including revenue/expense forecasting, capital equipment requests, and supply chain needs.
- Variance Analysis: Monitors department budget performance, identifies operational trends, and implements corrective actions to address fiscal variances and performance gaps.
- Labor Optimization: Drives effective labor management through position control, efficient scheduling, productivity benchmarking, and minimized premium pay utilization.
- Cost Reduction: Manages operating expenses and equipment utilization to identify and execute cost-containment and saving initiatives.
Position Requirements
Education
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN): Required
- Master’s Degree (MSN, MBA, or MHA): Preferred
Experience & Credentials
- Leadership Experience: Minimum of 3+ years of Director of Surgical Services experience within an acute care hospital setting is strictly required.
- Licensure: Active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license.
Department Overview & Volume Metrics
- Surgical Suites: 9 Operating Rooms (including 1 hybrid OR).
- Annual Case Volume: 5,500+ cases per year with consistent upward growth.
- Advanced Technology: Equipped with 5 da Vinci Xi Robots (designated Center of Excellence for Robotics); currently integrating the ROSA Surgical Robot system.
