Compounding Pharmacist
Location: Houston, TX
Schedule: Monday–Friday | Full-Time
Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Compounding Pharmacist to oversee sterile and non-sterile compounding operations within a high-quality pharmacy environment. This role is ideal for a pharmacist with extensive experience in compounding preparations, regulatory compliance, quality assurance, and pharmacy operations. The successful candidate will ensure compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations while supporting operational excellence, patient safety, and continuous quality improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily compounding operations in accordance with USP <797>, USP <800>, FDA, DEA, and Texas State Board of Pharmacy regulations.
- Ensure all compounded preparations are prepared safely, accurately, and in compliance with established policies and procedures.
- Lead regulatory readiness efforts and maintain continuous compliance with accreditation and inspection standards.
- Develop, implement, and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and quality assurance programs.
- Monitor environmental sampling, cleanroom certification, equipment maintenance, and documentation requirements.
- Review and verify compounded prescriptions for clinical appropriateness and accuracy.
- Investigate quality events, deviations, and medication errors, implementing corrective and preventive actions as needed.
- Collaborate with pharmacy leadership to improve operational efficiency, workflow, inventory management, and regulatory compliance.
- Maintain complete and accurate records for compounding, quality assurance, and regulatory documentation.
- Ensure compliance with infection control standards, hazardous drug handling requirements, and medication safety initiatives.
- Participate in internal audits and prepare for state, federal, and accreditation inspections.
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement throughout the pharmacy.
Required Qualifications
- PharmD or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy
- Active, unrestricted Pharmacist license in Texas
- Minimum of 3–5 years of compounding pharmacy experience
- Extensive knowledge of USP <797>, USP <800>, and sterile compounding best practices
- Strong understanding of state and federal pharmacy regulations, including FDA, DEA, and Board of Pharmacy requirements
- Experience with pharmacy quality assurance, regulatory inspections, and compliance programs
- Demonstrated leadership experience within pharmacy operations.
- Excellent organizational, documentation, and communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving abilities with exceptional attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in 503A compounding pharmacy operations.
- Experience managing cleanroom operations and environmental monitoring programs.
- Prior leadership or supervisory experience.
- Experience participating in Board of Pharmacy, PCAB, ACHC, URAC, or other accreditation inspections.
- Lean or process improvement experience is a plus.
