Behavioral Health Therapist / Clinical Counselor
Location: South Carolina

Position Summary
We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Behavioral Health Therapist / Clinical Counselor to provide comprehensive behavioral health services in an outpatient and/or integrated care setting. This position provides a high degree of clinical independence and includes assessment, diagnosis, counseling, psychotherapy, crisis intervention, treatment planning, case management, and coordination of care. The ideal candidate will have strong clinical skills, excellent communication abilities, and experience working with individuals, children, adolescents, couples, families, and groups experiencing behavioral health and/or substance use disorders.
This position also offers opportunities to participate in community outreach, professional education, program development, and clinical supervision.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct comprehensive psychosocial assessments, clinical interviews, and behavioral health evaluations.
- Provide individual, family, couples, and group counseling and psychotherapy.
- Develop, implement, and regularly evaluate individualized treatment plans.
- Provide evidence-based cognitive and behavioral interventions for a variety of behavioral health and substance use disorders.
- Provide crisis intervention and emergency behavioral health services as needed.
- Monitor patient progress and modify treatment approaches based on clinical needs and outcomes.
- Coordinate referrals and connect patients with appropriate community, social service, financial assistance, and healthcare resources.
- Collaborate with primary care providers, behavioral health professionals, social service agencies, and other members of the interdisciplinary care team.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential clinical documentation, case files, treatment plans, referrals, and discharge records.
- Participate in legal or regulatory processes related to patient care and rights when required.
- Provide follow-up services to promote continuity of care and successful treatment outcomes.
- Develop and participate in community outreach, education programs, workshops, and behavioral health initiatives.
- Serve as a clinical resource and provide consultation, education, and training to healthcare professionals, students, interns, and other appropriate personnel.
- Supervise therapists, social workers, students, or interns when applicable.
- Participate in quality improvement, research, program development, and policy initiatives as appropriate.
- Maintain compliance with applicable professional, ethical, legal, and regulatory standards.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong knowledge of behavioral health counseling, clinical social work, psychotherapy, and evidence-based treatment practices.
- Knowledge of cognitive and behavioral intervention techniques.
- Knowledge of crisis intervention principles and practices.
- Ability to conduct clinical interviews, assessments, and behavioral health evaluations.
- Ability to recognize, assess, and document patient symptoms, behaviors, reactions, and treatment progress.
- Strong understanding of patient rights, confidentiality, and applicable legal and ethical standards.
- Knowledge of community mental health resources, social service programs, healthcare resources, and vocational support services.
- Excellent clinical documentation and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work effectively with patients, families, healthcare providers, community organizations, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to exercise sound independent clinical judgment and make appropriate treatment and administrative decisions.
- Ability to remain calm and emotionally stable when working with individuals experiencing crisis, trauma, or significant emotional distress.
- Ability to evaluate treatment effectiveness and make appropriate modifications to therapeutic approaches.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
Required Qualifications
Candidates must meet one of the following pathways:
Master’s-Level Clinician
- Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related behavioral health field.
- Minimum of one year of professional experience providing therapy.
- Current South Carolina licensure or eligibility for independent clinical licensure, such as:
- Licensed Independent Psychological Counselor (LIPC)
- Licensed Independent Social Worker – Clinical Practice (LISW-CP)
- Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW)
- Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW)
Doctoral-Level Clinician
- Doctoral degree in Psychology.
- Minimum of two years of continuous experience providing therapy.
- Current South Carolina psychologist license or active progress toward licensure.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current South Carolina independent clinical license, including LIPC, LISW-CP, LICSW, LCSW, LPC, LMSW, or LISW.
- Experience providing behavioral health services in an outpatient, primary care, or integrated care setting.
- Experience with crisis intervention and case management.
- Experience working with individuals across the lifespan, including children and adolescents.
- Experience treating behavioral health and/or substance use disorders.
- Previous experience supervising therapists, social workers, students, or interns.
- Knowledge of South Carolina community mental health resources and social service programs.
- Experience with community outreach, education, and behavioral health programming.
