Job Description:
The Dental Assistant provides both clinical and administrative support in a dental practice. Under the supervision of a licensed dentist, this role is responsible for preparing treatment areas and equipment, assisting during procedures, supporting patient care, and performing various administrative tasks to ensure smooth clinic operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare treatment and clinical areas prior to procedures.
- Clean, disinfect, and sterilize instruments and handpieces.
- Assist the dentist or hygienist using single-handed or two-handed techniques.
- Operate high-volume evacuators during dental procedures.
- Prepare restorative materials and perform basic lab tasks (e.g., pouring and trimming study models).
- Maintain clinical supplies and monitor inventory levels.
- Assist with emergency protocols; maintain knowledge of First Aid and CPR.
- Support management of emergency drug kits.
- Understand and interpret Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
- Conduct biological indicator (spore) testing.
- Record clinical data in patient charts as directed by the dentist.
- Educate patients and the community on oral health practices.
- Provide instructions on the use and care of dental appliances.
- Take, process, and mount dental radiographs per regulatory standards.
- Obtain and record patients' vital signs.
- Perform coronal polishing, preliminary impressions, and topical applications (fluoride, anesthetics, desensitizers, etc.).
- Provide dietary counseling and oral hygiene instruction (including intra-oral guidance).
- Apply pit and fissure sealants and perform non-prescription tooth whitening.
- Polish dental restorations and assist with oral irrigation.
Administrative Duties:
- Manage patient reception, appointment scheduling, and recall system.
- Maintain the business area and ensure effective communication via phone and in person.
- Handle patient follow-ups and customer service inquiries.
- Perform billing, manage receivables/payables, and reconcile daily deposits.
- Maintain accurate financial records and file systems.
- Order and receive clinical and office supplies.
- Conduct consultations, review medical history, and explain office procedures.
- Establish and document financial agreements per office policy.
- Monitor patient progress through treatment plans.
- Assist with marketing efforts, public relations, and patient communications.
- Ensure follow-ups for pending treatment plans and referrals.
- Track and support treatment acceptance rates and ensure timely patient engagement.
Education & Experience:
- Graduate of a CODA-accredited Dental Assisting Program.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a chairside dental assistant.
- Strong interpersonal skills and excellent written and verbal communication.
