Job Summary: The Histotechnician is responsible for performing laboratory procedures to prepare tissue samples for histological examination. This includes processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining tissues to assist pathologists in diagnosing diseases. The role requires attention to detail, technical skill, and adherence to laboratory safety and quality control procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Tissue Processing:
  • Receive and prepare patient tissue samples for microscopic examination.
  • Process tissue specimens through fixation, dehydration, and embedding in paraffin or other embedding materials.
  1. Sectioning and Staining:
  • Cut thin tissue sections using microtomes and cryostats.
  • Perform routine and specialized staining techniques (e.g., Hematoxylin and Eosin, immunohistochemistry) to highlight tissue structures.
  1. Specimen Labeling and Documentation:
  • Label and track specimens to maintain proper identification and prevent sample misidentification.
  • Maintain accurate records of specimens, processing procedures, and staining techniques.
  1. Quality Control:
  • Ensure tissue samples are processed according to laboratory protocols and meet the required quality standards.
  • Perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and troubleshoot any issues.
  1. Safety and Compliance:
  • Follow all safety protocols and maintain a clean, safe work environment.
  • Adhere to federal, state, and institutional guidelines, including HIPAA regulations, to ensure patient confidentiality and safety.
  1. Collaboration and Communication:
  • Work closely with pathologists and laboratory supervisors to ensure specimens are prepared correctly.
  • Communicate effectively with laboratory team members to ensure smooth workflow.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Associate’s degree in Histotechnology or a related field. Certification from a recognized body such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is often required.
  • Experience: Previous experience in a laboratory or histology setting is preferred.
  • Skills:
  • Knowledge of histology techniques, including embedding, sectioning, and staining.
  • Familiarity with laboratory safety and quality control standards.
  • Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to operate laboratory equipment, including microtomes, cryostats, and tissue processors.
  • Strong communication skills to interact with medical professionals and laboratory staff.

Working Conditions:
