JOB SUMMARY
This position meets the minimum CLIA qualifications of a Laboratory General Supervisor. Under the direction of the Laboratory Director and/or Laboratory Manager, the Laboratory Supervisor coordinates and manages the day-to-day operations of assigned section(s) and shift(s). This role serves in an administrative capacity with direct reports and exempt pay status. Responsibilities include developing and implementing new procedures, instrumentation, quality control measures, and reagent use; maintaining policies and procedures that meet regulatory standards; and driving service quality improvements. The Laboratory Supervisor is responsible for holding personnel accountable through performance reviews and assisting in the orientation and competency development of staff.
MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide day-to-day supervision of high, moderate, and waived complexity testing performed by laboratory personnel.
- Remain accessible to address technical problems through on-site, telephone, or electronic consultation when testing is being performed.
- Ensure compliance with all policies, procedures, and standards set forth by state, federal, and regulatory agencies (e.g., CLIA, CAP, AABB, TJC).
- Plan, organize, and coordinate work activities for assigned section(s) and shift(s).
- Maintain accurate attendance and time records for staff.
- Assist with departmental budgeting, including expense analysis and variance reporting.
- Participate in performance review discussions that influence merit increases.
- Maintain and update procedural manuals for all tests performed; review at least biennially or as needed.
- Enforce safety policies and procedures.
- Research, evaluate, and implement new procedures, methodologies, instrumentation, and techniques as directed.
- Implement and maintain section- or shift-specific quality control programs, ensuring all applicable records are complete and up-to-date.
- Monitor test analysis and specimen examination to ensure acceptable analytic performance; review staff work to minimize errors and ensure corrective action when needed.
- Ensure remedial actions are taken for test system deviations and that patient results are not released until systems are functioning properly.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot equipment; arrange repairs and schedule preventative maintenance as needed.
- Prepare and submit required administrative and technical reports.
- Maintain adequate inventories of supplies and reagents.
- Train new personnel and provide continuing or remedial training as necessary.
- Maintain documentation of staff orientation, skills reviews, and competency assessments.
- Participate in performance improvement initiatives, including data collection and reporting.
- Conduct and document in-service education sessions.
- Participate in hiring, transfer, discipline, and termination decisions in consultation with leadership.
- Participate in proficiency testing programs and evaluate results.
- Attend meetings to review policy, equipment, procedure, and staffing changes.
- Use and maintain proficiency in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
- Perform and oversee laboratory testing, including specimen processing, critical value reporting, and result verification.
- Adhere to patient confidentiality requirements.
- Remain current in medical laboratory technology through continuing education, professional reading, and participation in relevant organizations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science, medical technology, or a related field from a regionally accredited institution, or equivalent education and experience.
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or Medical Laboratory Technician.
- At least 5 years of full-time primary experience in the specific section of responsibility.
Licenses/Certifications
- Active certification or eligibility for certification as MT (ASCP), CLS (ASCP), MLS (ASCP), MT (AMT), CLS (NCA/ASCP), or MT (AAB) required.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
Work may be performed in hospital, clinic, research facility, laboratory, or other healthcare environments where diagnostic equipment, tools, computers, and related technology are in constant use.
Adherence to safety, security, and infection control protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and other safety devices, is required.
