  • Provides direct patient care wherever the greatest need exists.
  1. Staffing Relief
  • Covers for staff shortages, unexpected call-ins, or surge situations (such as high patient volume or acuity spikes).
  • Helps maintain safe nurse-to-patient ratios.
  1. Clinical Resource Role
  • Brings a broad clinical skill set that can be applied in varied settings.
  • Acts as a knowledgeable resource for unit nurses, especially in crisis or high-acuity situations.
  1. Patient Safety & Quality
  • Supports hospitals in meeting quality and safety standards by filling staffing gaps.
  • Contributes to throughput and patient flow by ensuring units are adequately staffed.
  1. Special Projects / System Support (sometimes part of the role)
  • May assist with hospital-wide initiatives (e.g., onboarding, staff education, policy rollouts).
  • Sometimes helps in centralized functions like virtual nursing, triage, or rapid response support.

Typical Requirements

  • RN license, usually BSN-preferred.
  • 2–3+ years of broad clinical experience across multiple specialties.
  • Strong adaptability and critical thinking skills.
  • Comfort with floating, cross-training, and working in fast-changing environments.

How Hospitals Use Them

Think of a Centralized Support RN as a highly skilled, flexible nurse “on call” for the hospital’s staffing grid. They may be permanently assigned to a float pool, centralized staffing office, or even function as part of a regional float team across multiple facilities in a health system
