Physical Therapy Team Leader

Position Overview
The Physical Therapy Team Leader plays a key role in supporting the Director of Therapy Operations by overseeing daily operations of a therapy team or discipline. This position combines leadership responsibilities with hands-on patient care, typically providing direct therapy services 80–90% of the time.
The Team Leader ensures high-quality clinical care, effective staff coordination, and seamless communication across hospital departments. Responsibilities include supervising therapy assistants and technicians, managing staffing and scheduling, onboarding and training new team members, and fostering a positive and collaborative work environment.
This role requires a balance of strong leadership skills, clinical expertise, and the ability to inspire, mentor, and hold team members accountable for performance, while contributing to departmental growth, quality improvement, and patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide clinical evaluations, assessments, care planning, and treatment within licensed discipline.
- Delegate and supervise therapy assistants and support staff to ensure safe, effective care delivery.
- Assist with staffing, scheduling, and workload distribution to meet patient care needs.
- Support onboarding, training, and professional development of team members.
- Promote a positive and inclusive culture that aligns with organizational values and goals.
- Monitor departmental performance, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement best practices.
- Serve as a mentor and resource for clinical growth and professional development.
Qualifications
Licensure/Certification:
- Current state license as a Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, or Speech-Language Pathologist.
- Current BLS (CPR) certification, or obtained within 30 days of hire.
- For Speech-Language Pathologists: Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) required.
Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of discipline-specific or leadership experience, including at least 2 years of direct clinical practice.
- Advanced clinical certification or active participation in a therapy clinical ladder program preferred.
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong communication skills (oral and written) with the ability to foster collaboration across teams.
- Effective leadership, mentoring, and problem-solving skills.
- Time management, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to work independently and adapt in high-pressure or emergency situations.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift, push, pull, or move at least 30 pounds, including patients and equipment (with assistance as needed).
- Adequate visual acuity, speech clarity, and motor coordination for clinical tasks.
Work Environment:
- Indoor, climate-controlled, smoke-free environment with occasional outdoor exposure.
- Potential exposure to blood and body fluids.
- May require flexibility in scheduling, including weekends, evenings, holidays, and disaster response support.
