A Registered Dental Hygienist is a licensed preventive oral health professional responsible for providing educational, clinical, and therapeutic services to promote and maintain the oral health of patients. This position requires advanced skills in pain management and precision instrumentation.

🦷 Primary Duties and Clinical Responsibilities

  • Clinical Excellence and Precision:
  • Perform all clinical procedures, including prophylaxis, scaling, and root planing, utilizing dental loupes and a headlight to ensure superior visual acuity and precision in detecting and removing calculus/deposits.
  • Maintain an ergonomically correct posture while working (as facilitated by the use of loupes) to ensure long-term physical health and optimal comfort.
  • Patient Pain and Anxiety Management:
  • Assess patient needs for pain control and, where indicated, administer local anesthesia (infiltration and block injections) in accordance with the state's Dental Practice Act and required certification.
  • Administer topical anesthetics and, where applicable, nitrous oxide/oxygen analgesia.
  • Assessment, Screening, and Diagnostics:
  • Thoroughly review and update patient medical and dental histories, including vital signs and medication review.
  • Perform comprehensive head, neck, and oral examinations, including oral cancer screenings.
  • Accurately measure, record, and interpret periodontal health status (periodontal charting).
  • Take and process high-quality diagnostic dental X-rays (radiographs).
  • Preventive and Therapeutic Services:
  • Remove plaque, calculus, and stains from supra- and subgingival tooth surfaces using hand and ultrasonic instrumentation.
  • Apply protective materials such as fluorides and dental sealants.
  • Apply subgingival medicaments for periodontal disease treatment.
  • Patient Education and Documentation:
  • Provide personalized oral hygiene instruction on proper brushing, flossing, and the use of oral care devices.
  • Counsel patients on the relationship between diet, nutrition, and overall oral health.
  • Accurately and completely document all treatment, patient findings, and future care plans in the patient record.
  • Infection Control:
  • Adhere strictly to all OSHA and HIPAA guidelines, including instrument sterilization and operatory disinfection protocols.

🎓 Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Licensure: Current and valid state license as a Registered Dental Hygienist (RDH).
  • Certification: Current and valid Local Anesthesia Certification or permit as required by the state.
  • Education: Minimum of an Associate's Degree in Dental Hygiene from a Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) accredited program.
  • Clinical Proficiency: Proven experience and proficiency in advanced clinical skills, particularly scaling and root planing with deep pocket assessment.
  • Ergonomic Awareness: Commitment to using dental loupes and a headlight to ensure precision and maintain proper ergonomic posture.
  • Professionalism: Strong communication, interpersonal, and team collaboration skills.
  • Other: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification.
