Nurse Manager – Mother/Baby Unit (Postpartum)


The Nurse Manager – Mother/Baby Unit is responsible for the overall leadership, operations, and performance of the postpartum and mother/baby unit. This role oversees daily clinical and administrative functions to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality patient care while fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment. The Manager partners closely with the Women’s Services leadership team to develop and implement departmental goals, policies, procedures, and staffing strategies that support operational excellence and positive patient outcomes. The ideal candidate is a strong clinical leader with proven postpartum or mother/baby experience and the ability to effectively lead and support an experienced nursing team.


Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Operations

  • Plan, organize, direct, and evaluate unit operations to ensure efficient and effective patient care delivery.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and supervision to nursing and support staff.
  • Collaborate with department leadership to establish goals, policies, and process improvements.
  • Promote a positive team culture focused on patient-centered care, quality, and safety.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and organizational standards.
  • Monitor staffing, scheduling, productivity, and resource utilization to support operational efficiency.
  • Support staff development, performance management, and employee engagement initiatives.


Clinical Oversight

  • Maintain high standards of clinical practice within the Mother/Baby and Postpartum unit.
  • Ensure appropriate patient care coordination and continuity of care.
  • Serve as a clinical resource and support staff in managing complex patient care situations.
  • Promote evidence-based practices and quality improvement initiatives.


Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required
  • Master’s Degree preferred


Licensure & Certifications

  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the practicing state or Compact/Multi-State RN License required
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross are required
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification is required within an established timeframe if not currently certified


Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of recent RN experience in Women’s Services within an acute care setting required
  • Minimum of 1 year of leadership or supervisory experience required
  • Strong experience in Mother/Baby and Postpartum nursing required
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with experience supervising and supporting nursing staff preferred
