Position Summary
Under the general supervision of radiation oncology leadership, the Radiation Medicine Therapist delivers accurate radiation treatments as prescribed by the physician. This role ensures safe, effective therapy delivery while maintaining detailed documentation and providing exceptional patient care throughout the treatment process.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare and position patients for radiation therapy according to established procedures
- Review treatment prescriptions, charts, dose requirements, and treatment plans prior to therapy
- Explain procedures to patients, address concerns, and provide education on treatment effects and care of irradiated areas
- Safely transfer patients to and from treatment tables using appropriate equipment
- Set up, operate, and adjust radiation therapy equipment to deliver prescribed doses
- Administer radiation therapy accurately using blocks, wedges, and other accessories as required
- Monitor patients during treatment via visual and intercom systems to ensure safety and proper positioning
- Assess patient condition throughout treatment, noting changes such as skin reactions, nausea, or discomfort, and consult with physicians as needed
- Verify and document blood counts, port films, and treatment data on a regular basis
- Calculate radiation doses when necessary in the absence of a radiation physicist
- Assist physicists with patient measurements, contours, and verification of treatment plans
- Accurately document treatment delivery, dosages, and setup changes in patient records
- Maintain treatment rooms, ensure equipment cleanliness, and restock supplies
- Perform safety inspections on equipment and report malfunctions promptly
- Assist with scheduling, recordkeeping, and participation in patient care conferences
- Stay current with advances in radiation therapy through journals, education, and professional development
- Adhere to organizational standards of conduct, infection control, safety, and confidentiality
- Foster professional, respectful relationships with patients, families, physicians, and colleagues
- Perform additional duties as assigned
Education & Experience
Education:
- Associate’s Degree in Radiation Therapy or a related field from an accredited institution (or equivalent)
Experience:
- Clinical knowledge and equipment familiarity typically gained through 3–6 months of on-the-job training
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Strong analytical skills to determine appropriate patient setup and treatment parameters
- Ability to calculate treatment duration and identify potential adverse reactions
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to support patients and collaborate with care teams
- Attention to detail and commitment to safety, accuracy, and documentation standards
