Position Summary

The RN First Assist (RNFA) provides perioperative nursing care and surgical first assist support in collaboration with surgeons and the surgical services team to ensure safe, high-quality surgical outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver safe, evidence-based perioperative nursing care aligned with physician orders and standards of practice.
• Assess patients, develop individualized plans of care, and document in the EMR.
• Prepare OR, equipment, and patients for procedures; position and prep patients.
• Initiate and maintain surgical counts; perform time-out and safe surgery verification.
• Assist surgeons during procedures, anticipating needs and providing operative field visualization.
• Support hemostasis, wound closure, postoperative local anesthetic injection, and dressing application per surgeon direction.
• Administer medications, blood, and blood products per policy.
• Delegate, supervise, and support surgical team members.
• Respond to emergent situations, including code response and malignant hyperthermia protocols.
• Maintain patient privacy and provide family communication and education.
• Follow infection prevention, safety, and regulatory compliance standards.
• Participate in quality improvement, patient safety, and performance initiatives.
• Precept, mentor, and assist with orientation of new staff and students.
• Serve as charge nurse and assist with daily OR operations when assigned.
• Participate in call rotation and float to similar units as needed.

Qualifications

• 3–4 years related experience (minimum 2 years OR experience)
• Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

Licensure & Certifications

• Active South Carolina RN License
• BLS (American Heart Association)
• Completion of an AORN-accredited RN First Assist (RNFA) program
