Job Title: Hospice/Home Health Volunteer Coordinator
Position Summary
The Hospice Volunteer Coordinator plans, directs, and manages all aspects of the hospice volunteer program. This role ensures that trained, compassionate volunteers are recruited, oriented, and effectively placed to meet the emotional, social, and administrative needs of hospice patients, caregivers, and staff. The Coordinator serves as a key link between the community, the volunteer workforce, and the clinical interdisciplinary team.
Key Responsibilities
Program Management & Compliance
- Regulatory Alignment: Manage the volunteer program in strict compliance with CMS (Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services), state regulations, and CHAP standards.
- Cost-Savings Mandate: Track and document volunteer hours to maintain the federal Medicare 5% cost-savings requirement.
- Quality Improvement: Participate in Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities to elevate care standards.
- Record Keeping: Maintain detailed personnel files, background checks, medical screenings, and training logs within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system.
Recruitment & Onboarding
- Outreach Initiatives: Conduct community outreach, recruitment campaigns, and attend local health or volunteer fairs to secure talent.
- Candidate Screening: Vet, interview, and run mandatory background checks on all new volunteer applicants.
- Training Facilitation: Develop and execute comprehensive orientation programs covering hospice philosophy, HIPAA, infection control, and grief support.
Staffing & Supervision
- Patient Matching: Assess patient and family needs to strategically match volunteers for direct companionship or respite care.
- Role Delegation: Assign volunteers to appropriate administrative, clerical, bereavement support, or special event roles.
- Support & Mentorship: Provide regular check-ins, emotional debriefings, and on-call guidance to support volunteers navigating patient losses.
- Retention Programs: Plan and execute volunteer appreciation initiatives, continuing education modules, and recognition events.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
- Clinical Integration: Attend Interdisciplinary Group (IDG) meetings to report on volunteer activities and update care plans.
- Referral Management: Review and process clinical staff referrals seeking volunteer interventions for specific families.
