Job Summary
The Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse provides independent, comprehensive, and patient-centered clinical care to adult patients experiencing acute medical conditions or recovering from surgical procedures. Utilizing the nursing process and advanced clinical reasoning, the MedSurg RN manages both routine and complex care regimens, addresses clinical contingencies, and coordinates care delivery through effective delegation to auxiliary healthcare providers.
Responsibilities
- Comprehensive Nursing Care: Assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized nursing care plans for assigned patients in strict accordance with ANA Scope and Standards of Practice.
- Medication & Treatment Administration: Safely administer medications and prescribed clinical treatments; continuously monitor patients for treatment efficacy, side effects, and potential adverse reactions.
- Clinical Documentation: Maintain real-time, comprehensive, and accurate electronic health records (EHR) documenting patient histories, clinical symptoms, interventions, and care outcomes.
- Holistic Support: Proactively address the increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of hospitalized patients and their families.
- Patient & Caregiver Education: Assess educational barriers and provide clear health management instructions to patients, family members, and designated post-discharge caregivers.
- Team Collaboration: Foster a collaborative, communicative multidisciplinary environment to ensure safe patient throughput and optimal clinical outcomes.
Job Requirements
Education & Experience
- Education: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) is preferred.
- Experience: One (1) year of recent clinical experience in an acute care Medical-Surgical or similar acute service line setting is preferred.
Licenses & Core Certifications
- RN License: Current, unencumbered Registered Nurse license in the state of employment, or a valid compact/multi-state license.
- Basic Life Support (BLS): Required upon hire (American Heart Association or American Red Cross).
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS): Required. (Note: Refer to the Credential Grace Periods below if you do not currently hold this certification).
Onboarding & Orientation Expectations
- Comprehensive Orientation: All experienced RN hires will complete a structured clinical orientation program within their first 30 days of employment.
- Preceptorship & Competency Validation: New hires will be paired with a trained clinical preceptor to validate initial organizational competencies and a dedicated Medical-Surgical clinical competency track.
- Residency Track: Newly licensed RNs or nurses transitioning into the specialty may participate in a structured nurse residency or specific orientation track, with skills validation documented dynamically at the bedside.
Credential Grace Periods
Required certifications must be obtained within the specified timeframes based on your experience level in this specialty.
- Experienced Nurse: Holds at least 1 year of acute care clinical experience in a similar service line within the past 3 years.
- Nurse New to the Specialty: A new graduate, or an experienced nurse with less than 1 year of acute care clinical experience in this specific service line within the past 3 years.
