Job Summary
The Full-Time Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) serves as an integral member of the surgical team, working closely with surgeons, anesthesiologists, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel to deliver safe, high-quality care to patients during invasive procedures. The incumbent is responsible for preparing and maintaining the sterile field, anticipating the needs of the surgical team, and ensuring all instrumentation and equipment are sterile, functional, and readily available.
Core Responsibilities
- Pre-Operative Preparation: Prepare the operating room by gathering and arranging necessary sterile surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies specific to the scheduled procedure. Ensure all equipment is functioning correctly and maintain strict aseptic technique during setup.
- Intra-Operative Assistance: Actively assist the surgeon during procedures by anticipating their needs, passing sterile instruments, sponges, and other supplies efficiently and safely.
- Sterile Field Maintenance: Maintain constant vigilance of the sterile field, immediately identifying and correcting any breaks in aseptic technique to minimize the risk of surgical site infections.
- Specimen & Count Management: Accurately perform surgical counts of instruments, sponges, and sharps with the circulating nurse before, during, and after procedures. Safely handle, identify, and preserve specimens for laboratory analysis.
- Post-Operative Breakdown: Assist in room turnover by safely cleaning and preparing used instruments for transport to Central Sterile Processing. Safely dispose of sharps and hazardous waste in accordance with facility and regulatory safety standards.
- Team Collaboration: Maintain a calm, professional, and collaborative presence in high-pressure situations, communicating effectively with all members of the multidisciplinary surgical team.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technology program.
- Certifications & Licensure:
- Active Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential issued by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) / CPR certification.
- Must comply with any state-specific registration or licensing requirements for Surgical Technologists in New Mexico.
- Experience:
- Minimum of one (1) year of dedicated clinical experience as a CST in an acute care hospital or outpatient surgical center preferred.
- Proficiency in multiple surgical specialties (e.g., Orthopedics, General, OB/GYN, Neuro) is highly desirable.
- Skills & Abilities: Deep knowledge of surgical instrumentation, surgical procedures, and human anatomy. Exceptional manual dexterity, attention to detail, and physical stamina required to stand for extended periods.
