Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced, dependable Registered Dental Technician (RDT) to join our team and take responsibility for producing high-quality dental appliances while maintaining excellent standards for accuracy, quality, efficiency, and patient care.

The ideal candidate will be technically strong, detail-oriented, organized, and willing to develop into a leadership and mentoring role. This position is intended to become a key long-term role within the organization, with an opportunity for the right candidate to assume increasing responsibility and eventually serve as the department/team lead or successor to the current senior technician.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fabricate, modify, repair, and finish dental appliances in accordance with prescriptions and established quality standards.
  • Review cases carefully for accuracy, completeness, and potential issues before production.
  • Maintain accurate case documentation and production records.
  • Work effectively with dentists, dental staff, technicians, and other team members.
  • Follow infection-control, OSHA, laboratory, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain equipment, instruments, and work areas.
  • Identify production problems and recommend improvements.
  • Meet established quality, turnaround-time, and productivity expectations.
  • Stay current with dental technology, materials, techniques, and digital workflows.
  • Assist in training and mentoring less-experienced technicians.
  • Help document procedures and develop standardized workflows.
  • Take increasing responsibility for scheduling, quality control, inventory, workflow management, and team coordination as experience develops.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Current RDT certification/registration as applicable to the jurisdiction.
  • Demonstrated experience in dental laboratory technology.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality.
  • Ability to independently manage cases and prioritize workload.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Commitment to confidentiality, professionalism, and patient safety.

Preferred:

  • Experience with digital dentistry/CAD-CAM workflows.
  • Experience with quality-control processes.
  • Previous mentoring or supervisory experience.
  • Experience creating or improving laboratory procedures.
  • Interest in developing into a leadership position.

What We Are Looking For in the Right Candidate

Beyond technical ability, the successful candidate should demonstrate:

  • Ownership: Takes responsibility for results rather than waiting to be directed.
  • Reliability: Consistently meets commitments and deadlines.
  • Judgment: Recognizes when a case requires additional review or consultation.
  • Leadership potential: Can teach others and positively influence the team.
  • Continuous improvement: Looks for ways to improve quality, efficiency, and consistency.
  • Communication: Can communicate professionally with both clinical and laboratory personnel.
  • Long-term mindset: Interested in growing with the organization and eventually assuming greater responsibility.

Succession Plan

The position should be structured around a 3–5 year development pathway rather than simply hiring someone to fill an immediate vacancy.

Phase 1 — First 90 Days: Learn & Validate

Goal: Confirm technical ability, cultural fit, reliability, and potential.

The RDT will:

  • Learn the organization's workflows and quality standards.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in core laboratory responsibilities.
  • Complete required compliance and safety training.
  • Learn documentation and case-management procedures.
  • Work alongside the current senior technician/leader.
  • Begin documenting critical procedures.

Success indicators: Consistent quality, dependable performance, good communication, and ability to work independently.

Phase 2 — Months 3–12: Develop Ownership

Goal: Move from technician to trusted key employee.

The RDT begins taking ownership of:

  • Specific case categories.
  • Quality-control checks.
  • Inventory and equipment processes.
  • Workflow improvements.
  • Training on selected procedures.
  • Documentation and standard operating procedures.

The current senior technician begins transferring knowledge deliberately rather than simply performing the work themselves.

Phase 3 — Year 1–2: Leadership Development

Goal: Prepare the RDT to function as the senior/lead technician.

The candidate gradually assumes responsibility for:

  • Training newer employees.
  • Troubleshooting difficult cases.
  • Monitoring quality.
  • Coordinating workflow.
  • Assisting with purchasing/inventory.
  • Updating SOPs.
  • Identifying operational problems.
  • Communicating with management regarding laboratory needs.

At this stage, the employee should be able to perform the majority of the senior technician's critical responsibilities.

Phase 4 — Year 2–3+: Successor Readiness

Goal: Establish the RDT as the designated successor.

The successor should be capable of:

  • Running day-to-day laboratory operations.
  • Maintaining established quality standards.
  • Training and supervising staff.
  • Handling routine problems independently.
  • Managing critical vendor/equipment relationships.
  • Maintaining regulatory and compliance standards.
  • Making appropriate operational decisions.
  • Stepping into the senior role during the current leader's absence.

Phase 5 — Transition

When the current senior technician is ready to reduce responsibilities, retire, move into another position, or otherwise transition out, the successor should already be performing most operational responsibilities.

The transition should include:

  1. A documented list of critical responsibilities.
  2. A list of key contacts and vendors.
  3. Written SOPs for essential processes.
  4. Cross-training of at least one additional employee.
  5. A defined period of overlapping responsibilities.
  6. Formal transfer of supervisory/management duties.
  7. A 30-, 60-, and 90-day post-transition review.
