Position Summary
The Hospital Pharmacist is responsible for providing comprehensive pharmaceutical care during the night shift in an acute care hospital environment. This role ensures safe, effective, and timely medication use for hospitalized patients by managing drug distribution, reviewing medication orders, and collaborating with the interdisciplinary healthcare team. The pharmacist acts as the clinical expert on medication therapy and plays a key role in patient safety, regulatory compliance, and pharmacy operations.
Work Schedule
- Night shift schedule on a 7-on/7-off rotation.
- Typical hours may be consistent overnight shifts (~7PM - 7AM), depending on operational needs.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Clinical Services
- Review and verify all medication orders for appropriateness, accuracy, dosing, interactions, and contraindications.
- Monitor patients’ medication therapy and adjust regimens in collaboration with prescribers to optimize therapeutic outcomes.
- Provide clinical support and drug information to physicians, nurses, and other allied health professionals.
Medication Distribution & Operations
- Oversee and ensure the safe, efficient preparation and dispensing of medications during the night shift.
- Maintain the security and control of the hospital’s drug supply, including controlled substances.
- Supervise pharmacy technicians and support staff to ensure workflow continuity.
Regulatory & Safety Compliance
- Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local pharmacy practice regulations and standards.
- Participate in initiatives to support medication safety, quality improvement, and risk reduction throughout the hospital.
Interprofessional Collaboration
- Serve as a medication therapy resource for the healthcare team, providing recommendations, interventions, and drug utilization reviews.
- Participate in clinical rounds or team huddles as appropriate during night shift coverage.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of pharmaceutical interventions, medication discrepancies, and quality improvement activities.
- Contribute to pharmacy department reporting, metrics, and compliance documentation.
Qualifications
Education & Licensure
- Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree from an accredited institution.
- Active, unrestricted pharmacist license in Indiana
Experience
- Previous hospital/inpatient pharmacy experience strongly preferred
Skills & Competencies
- Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities with interdisciplinary teams.
- Proficiency with pharmacy information systems and electronic medical records.
Certifications & Other Requirements
- BLS/ACLS certification may be required or preferred by some hospital employers.
- Commitment to maintaining current professional knowledge and continuing education.
Working Conditions
- Night shift work in a fast-paced hospital setting.
- Requires prolonged periods of standing, frequent interaction with healthcare teams, and occasional handling of emergency medication requests.
- This position may involve participation in on-call rotations or emergency response.
